What is the interior design process?

While working on an interior design project, there are a series of steps that you need to take up. Under the interior design process, these steps are important to have a quality outcome.

An interior designer is a person who enhances the design and looks of a space, making it healthier and aesthetically pleasing. Apart from beautifying the building, interior design also focuses on the safety and function of a space.

There are certain steps in interior design you should keep in mind while engaging in an interior design project. After the Covid-19 pandemic, the need for interior designers has increased, especially for institutional places such as hospitals, offices, homes, etc. Let’s give it a look!

5 interior design process steps

Essentially, there are five stages in the interior designing process.

  • Strategic planning

Interior designing focuses more on the personalized needs of a client. This includes understanding their requirements like whether it is an office, housing, or a studio. This also includes understanding how many people will be occupying that space.

For example, if it’s a family, then what are their hobbies, and how do they want to set up things? If it’s a commercial space, then does the atmosphere need to be creative or technical?

You need to understand the customer’s wants and needs, and work accordingly. You’ll also need to set a budget and finalize a timeline for the project.

  • Conceptual Development

In this stage, you conceptualize the idea and give it a definite form through sketches and designs.

For example, these days people are more inclined towards having an ‘open space’. It will require you to adjust many spaces that are empty to blend well with the overall look. Hence, you’ll need to create new sketches which properly ideate what you want to do with the open spaces. The illustrations will be easy to understand, and the client will approve once whether they like such development or not.

  • Design development

One of your sketches in the conceptual stage will be finalized, post which you need to add details to your design. This interior design process will make you ask a lot of questions, like which architectural style are we going with? Do we need heavy furnishing or minimalist furniture?

You need to illustrate the tiles, wallpaper, and other essentials required in your client’s place. With better visual aids such as detailed drawings, floor plans, color selection, and fabric choices, you’ll be able to imagine their and your dream space in a better manner.

  • Construction Documentation

Once your design gains approval, you need to start working on construction drawings. These need to be given to contractors following your lead including carpenters, electricians, etc.

Your construction documents will also help you obtain construction permits from your city municipality. Your specifications in this document regarding lightning, fissures, etc. will first get approval, and then will be processed for cost estimation.

  • Construction & Administration

Kudos! You have completed your phase of ideation and planning. Now you’ll be bringing life to your brilliant idea by executing it. Construction will start according to the specifications you have mentioned in your document, within your stipulated budget and proposed timeline.

You should have a basic structure ready at hand now, which will help you execute the best interior spaces for clients.

Let’s look over some interior designing tips to make your work easier!

  • Purchase items within a given budget. Your clients will have a specific budget and you must be resourceful with it.
  • Lightning is necessary to make or break a look. Find ways to open up small and dark spaces, and make them more lively.
  • Make sure to add personalized touch to the space. You can do this by focusing on small items such as bowls, books, and any other decorations that catch your eye and go with the chosen aesthetic.
  • Remember to not push furniture against the wall as it will give a very stiff look to your room. Leaving spaces will make the room look airier.
  • Instead of following strict designing principles, ask your clients if there are any sentimental pieces they would like to add to the decor.

As designing experts, it is our responsibility to equip you with the best functional and creative skills which will help you bring life to your client’s dream home.
