Thesis Statement:
The aim of this capstone is to design a climatically and culturally responsive bungalow that is driven by, and designed for the behavioural pattern of the residents in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, to maximise the indoor comfort with respect to the given rising temperature trends.
The term “climate change” is often used to refer specifically to anthropogenic climate change (also known as global warming) caused by human activity, as opposed to changes in climate that may have resulted as part of Earth’s natural processes. The natural fluctuation, or variability, is being overtaken by a human- induced warming that has serious implications for the stability of the planet’s climate. India is a hot tropical climate, its geography has a heavy dependence on agriculture, stable monsoons and a coastline stretching across 7000 km. It is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change due to the frequent occurrences of droughts, heat waves, flash floods etc in the past 5 years.
In the business-as-usual scenario, the only counter measure that emerges as
a result of uncomfortable temperatures, is increased use of electrical appliances to maintain indoor comfort. This capstone aims to introduce passive design measures in the interior system of a residential bungalow in Bhopal, that minimize the heat ingress into the building interior maintaining the comfort of the residents. This capstone draws
a paradigm shift where humans consider the built and natural environments, like weather, climate, and our own activity as part of the same system—not as distinct silos. This is where interior design plays a very crucial role and targets the micro environments created within built structures. Therefore, the bungalow will finally be climatically, culturally and behaviourally responsive.
