Lexel by Aanchal Seth
Thesis Statement:
Performance – based screening tool that helps teacher identify students in kindergarten- second grade who may have risk to dyslexia, so that appropriate early intervention can be given.
Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that affects reading and language based processing skills without affecting IQ. It makes it difficult for them to read due to problems in identifying speech sounds and learning how to relate letters and words to the sound (decoding and phonological awareness), processing speed, auditory short- term memory, language skills and verbal comprehension, or rapid naming which results in difficulty in writing, reading and spelling.
Dyslexia is a hidden disability, it is a condition which cannot be cured but made better by intervening early. They require a different way of learning and not just repetitive instructions. About 2.19 to 2.20 percent of the entire population suffer from dyslexia, this high prevalence rate indicates the need to develop tools for early identification of children with reading difficulties (the risky pool) early in kindergarten – 1st grade before the disability sets in. In Indian education system, 5-8 years age is the critical period for acquiring the skills of reading and writing. If children pass through these ages without acquiring the skills, it is very likely that they struggle with a lot of learning as well as behaviour problems in the higher standard.
